Walks and hikes in lake tekapo

WALKING & HIKING

Lake Tekapo Regional Park

Time: 24km of trails of various lengths starting from 5 minutes.

This 165ha exotic forest on the south east edge of Lake Tekapo  ThePark provides recreational facilities close to the township for locals, and the increasing number of visitors to the area, whilst recognising the soil conservation and environmental values within the Park.

The trails are 2-way and are for walking, jogging and cycling.

Cowans Hill Trail

Time: 1.5-2 hours round trip

This track is signposted just after the dam/bridge when leaving the village centre and heading in the direction of Christchurch. It is a short circuit track and is also well used by cyclists. From the end of the trail, you can cross State Highway 8 and continue through the forest, along the lake and Pines Beach, returning to the village centre via the Church of the Good Shepherd.
During the spring/early summer you can see lots of Lupins on this walk.

This is Richards favorite walk.

Mt John Summit Walk

Time: 45 minutes one way

Just before the Tekapo Springs you will find the start of the trail and a sign in the Pine Trees.
The trails climbs Mt John Hill until you reach the summit where the Observatory and Astro Cafe are.
The views from here on a clear day are some of the most amazing you will get to experience.
Returning on the same trail is a little faster as it is all down hill.

This is one of Jovanas favourite walks!

Mt John Summit and the lake shore

Time: 3.5 hours round trip

Starting from the Tekapo Springs, carry on along the lake front and you will pick up the poled trail that will take you to the summit  where the Observatory and Astro Cafe are.
The views from here on a clear day are some of the most amazing you will get to experience.
There is not a lot of shelter from the sun on this walk so take your sunscreen and hat!
