Star gazing in lake tekapo

STAR GAZING

Star-gazing at the Church of the Good Shepherd

Lake Tekapo is located in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve, which means it's one of the best places on earth to observe the stars. Whether you're an astronomy enthusiast or just a curious traveler, you'll be amazed by the dazzling night sky here.

At Tailor Made Tekapo Accommodation, we can show you the best spots in the village to gaze at the stars, including our very own gardens. To get the most out of your stargazing experience, we recommend finding a location with minimal light pollution, dressing warmly, and avoiding any bright lights, including phone screens.

For a truly unforgettable experience, we highly recommend booking a tour of the University Observatory on Mt John. As a working research facility, the observatory is not open to the general public after dark, but tours can be arranged. Even if you don't visit at night, the views from Mt John during the day are simply breathtaking.

Whether you choose to explore the night sky on your own or join a guided tour, stargazing in Lake Tekapo is an experience you won't want to miss.

Star Gazing Tours:

Dark Sky Project take you to Mt John or Cowan's Observatory.

Tekapo Springs also offer Night Tours which include a soak in the hot pools!

Silver River Stargazing take you to their exclusive star gazing location on their private 25,000 acre farm.

Billy the Bard For a more informal and entertaining evening, join local character Billy the Bard on the Lake Front Domain at sunset for 'starytelling' as he calls out the starts. Billy is full of information and mythical tales. Billy offers this to anyone who wishes to join in for free. If you have a great time,  we're sure he'd appreciate a little koha (tip).
